Physician leadership is a skill that so often is expected to be learned on the job, without formal training. While nothing can take the place of hands-on experience, OneOncology has taken on the task of developing a more formalized education program specific to operating as a community oncology physician leader. In 2024, we launched the first iteration of a formalized education program, the Emerging Physician Leaders program, for select OneOncology practice physicians who have been deemed by their practice leadership as a future leader.

This program is designed to be two years in length and includes both in-person and virtual education sessions. The program offers access to OneOncology executives as well as current practice physician and administrative leaders who offer advice and topic overviews.

Topics in the first year included:
1. Media and Speaker Training
2. Ins and Outs of Drug Reimbursement
3. Joint Venture Opportunities
4. Financial Metrics for Success in an MSO
5. Payor Negotiations

OneOncology gathers feedback continuously throughout the program to ensure the company is meeting the needs of both participants and practices, as well as to evolve the program to ensure it continues to deliver value.

OneOncology is also offering additional hands-on experience for emerging physician leaders to hone their skills and build expertise, develop national reputations, and support the initiatives that benefit all partner practices. As a physician-led organization, there is a tremendous and ongoing need for physicians to offer their time and expertise to improve the platform and help partner practices. OneOncology believes that by offering early and often opportunities to physician leaders at the MSO level, it can prepare practices and OneOncology to be the home for the best physician leaders in oncology.

One example of this has been the establishment of the Educational Advisory Group. This small group, comprised of physicians across our partner practices, will guide the education strategy of the platform, including topic development for regional and national conferences as well as innovative strategies for ensuring all OneOncology physicians have access to the education they need to practice at the top of their abilities.

As OneOncology’s educational programs mature, expect an escalation of focus both on the Emerging Physician Leaders program, and in development of physician leadership offerings. OneOncology is committed to raising up its current physicians to be the next generation of leaders in the field and continuing to attract the best to our practices as the premier place to practice and lead within oncology.
